THE MECHANICS OF FEELINGS

Here is where we get “scientific” about feelings.

Practically speaking, there are basically two classes of feelings. These are most usually described as "good feelings" and "bad feelings." In different words, we talk about feeling "up," or "down," or feeling "high," or "low." It appears that almost any feeling you can name falls into one of these two categories, or somewhere in between.

Lets take a look at how these feelings relate to each other, and how they effect each other. We can also discover the most significant reason why feelings change and why some "lucky" people have a tendency to have good feelings while others tend to have bad feelings.

It is "success" and "failure" that determines how a person’s feeling change. If something happens which he considers a success, which is something he wants, he will naturally feel better. When something happens that he considers a failure, something gone wrong, he will naturally feel worse.

So far, this may seem obvious. Failure feels bad; success feels good. That is the way it always feels, but let's take it one step further.

Notice the behavior patterns that go along with the various feelings. When he is feeling good, a person is outgoing and active. When he is feeling bad, he is withdrawn and passive.

The better a person is feeling, the more and better he communicates. The better he communicates, the more successful he tends to be. The more successful he is, the better he feels. In other words, feeling good promotes good communication, and this promotes more success and additional good feelings. The state tends to be self perpetuating. Thus, good feelings have a special value; they promote additional good feelings.

When a person is feeling badly it is quite the opposite. The worse you feel, the more withdrawn you are. You communicate less, and not very well. You don't pay attention to things as well, and because of this more things tend to go wrong. Things are forgotten, misunderstandings arise, accidents happen, and you don't handle things as well. Thus, more failures accumulate, and this is more depressing, tending to make you feel even worse. It is this Emotional Barrier that makes it much more difficult for you to handle your problems. This is another reason why it is vital to get rid of those negative feelings and start feeling good again.
