Black & White

To go back

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe

Catch a nigger by the toe

If he hollers let him go

(or you're in for a really big lawsuit JB)

I didn’t really understand what all that meant when I was a nine-year-old. At that time my very best friend was a black classmate whom I not only admired but looked up to because he was the smartest person in school.

By the time Google recently found him for me he also turned out to be one of the smartest people in the state, and was doing very well, as a brilliant man would.

Berah McSwain was an influence on me for the rest of my life. I was never just tolerant of black people. I admire them. I love the way that they interact with one another. I loved their communities/neighborhoods which I used to visit when I first came to DC.

And when I later worked with drug rehab communities which were over 90% black I felt more comfortable than I did when I was running People Games for groups that were 100% white.

I am just delighted that I knew him.
